Drag Queen Bingo Ad Banned for Promoting Misleading Self-Improvement Claims

A recent promotional effort by Mecca Bingo, featuring *RuPaul’s Drag Race UK* personality Baga Chipz, drew criticism from the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The Instagram advertisement, now removed, presented two differing pictures of Baga Chipz. The first, tagged “before Mecca Bingo,” displayed the drag queen in everyday attire with minimal cosmetics and a less-than-enthusiastic demeanor. The second, labeled “after Mecca Bingo,” showcased Baga in full drag regalia, complete with a shimmering ensemble, a wide grin, and a champagne flute.

Two individuals lodged complaints, asserting that the advertisement suggested playing bingo could somehow enhance one’s appearance and confidence, a breach of advertising regulations. Mecca Bingo responded that the transformation was intended to be lighthearted and embody the spirit of drag performance, rather than imply any form of personal betterment. They further argued that audiences would grasp the ad’s lack of literal intent. Nevertheless, the ASA ultimately agreed with the complainants, concurring that the advertisement could be misconstrued, particularly without sufficient background.

The United Kingdom’s advertising watchdog, the ASA, prohibited a promotional spot from Mecca Bingo that showcased drag performers. The agency stated the advertisement irresponsibly connected wagering with feelings of self-worth. While the intended viewers likely understood the advertisement’s message, the ASA determined it suggested that participating in games of chance could elevate one’s personal appearance. Mecca Bingo received instructions to cease airing the advertisement and to steer clear of comparable situations in upcoming marketing efforts.
